A common mistake a beginning cyclist will make is to train too hard for too long without respite. It is hard not to do when you're enthusiastic about a new sport, but this can lead to fatigue and burnout. Worse, the diminishing returns from your efforts can be discouraging and could potentially end your season.
The BTC philosophy is to maximize gain for the least amount of work. We'll teach you to train smarter, not harder. There are only so many hours in the day and even in the best circumstances, training takes second place to career and family. We offer the tools and services that will help you along every step of the way: RPM indoor cycling, coaching services, and biometric testing. |
RPM is one of the few places you'll find riders of all types, abilities, and backgrounds sweating it out side by side. Whether you're a mountain biker, roadie, sprinter, climber, beginner, or veteran; our indoor sessions reward cyclists of all breeds. It is a unique experience that has become a staple for Philadelphia cycling, filling up not only over the winter months but throughout the year.
The program was developed by owner and head coach Joe Wentzell over 15 years ago. At the start of the program the participant performs a baseline fitness test to determine their personal training zones —think easy spinning, moderate pace, hard effort. The following 12 weeks follow a progressive training sequence with each session building on the previous one and targeting specific skills.
How does it work? Simply bring in your bike and set it up on one of our 16 CompuTrainers. Our expert coaches will then lead you through the different courses and workouts designed to fine-tune your strengths and work out your weaknesses.
Since you ride according to your training zones, no one is ever left behind. Personal improvement is achieved as you endure increasingly difficult efforts for progressively longer intervals along with everyone else; riding harder you would on your own.
You'll learn valuable skills like efficient pedal technique and posture. Your power output will increase: average improvement in power increase ranges 6–8%. And you'll get leaner: our participants show a 4% drop on average in body fat percentage.

Take the guesswork out of training. An experienced coach can help you map out your season, teach you about core concepts such as periodization and recovery, and guide you through setbacks like vacation or injury. Moreover, by reporting to a coach on a regular basis you make yourself accountable for the workouts that you've planned. With a BTC coach, you can rest assured that hitting your weekly and monthly goals will prime you for your target events.
Some athletes may simply need a sit-down meeting to plan out their season. Others may benefit from a one-on-one run, bike, or swim session to address specific performance issues. You may decide to meet with your coach weekly or monthly for observation and guidance every step of the way. Whatever your needs are, Breakaway has a coaching structure for you.
