Instead of resting on his laurels and declaring the off-season, Joe decided to follow-up a successful Masters Track Nationals—where he brought home a national title—with Masters Track Worlds in Manchester, UK.
Here's the VeloUK report on the men's 40-44 scratch race:
It was quite an aggressive race, brutal even, with lots of breaks going but nothing was sticking until Joseph Wentzell went on his own. Being solo, he was given some rope to sit out there and fry but the thing is he didn’t fry and by the time the others realised how strong he was, Wentzell was close to taking the lap which he did.
So while he sat in the bunch and cruised to the line the winner, a small group got away to sprint it out for the minor placings with Eduardo Leguizamon (Arg) getting the Silver and David Stevens (Aus) the Bronze.
Lapped the field. Solo. Wow.
Very nice work Joe! Congratulations! You do the shop and the Philadelphia cycling community proud! |

Thanks to your support, Breakaway was recognized as the number one Philly bike shop in 2011. We were awarded the title on Philly Hot List via popular vote—yours!—while Best of Philly was an editor's pick! Here's what they had to say:
An impressive range of bikes for all riders, plus super-nice mechanics who are total gearheads, but who get that you might not be. They just want you to love your bike as much as they do.
This means a great deal to us. We believe a shop can only be as good as the community it serves. Considering Philadelphia's rich and thriving cycling community, we've had our work cut out for us. This recognition only inspires us to work even harder to deliver the quality of service you deserve! |

Imagine the amount of force required to propel your bike forward. Power from your upper body, from your core, and from your legs converging on one point: the ball of your foot.
A good footbed is the single most beneficial fit upgrade you can make. It directly impacts comfort and performance. Properly supported feet help your pedal-stroke track true, minimizing discomfort and injury from the tips of your toes all the way to your lower-back.
There are many inserts on the market today, but none are as precise as eSole's custom footbeds. Their system starts with TruCapture—an air-pillow scanner that reads your foot in its true anatomic position using over a million data points. Using that data, ePro footbeds are CNC-machined in the USA to perfectly conform to the contours of your feet providing unmatched comfort and support.
Also from eSoles: eFit semi-custom footbeds. This modular system uses interchangeable soles, arches and metatarsal pads to achieve the perfect fit in an affordable package.
Stop by the shop for a foot scan and experience the eSoles difference firsthand! Your feet will thank you for it.

Meet the commuter bike of the future. A bike without the cables and chains that smear grease on your pants. One that can switch between a fixed-gear and freewheel, on the fly, depending on your mood. With built-in electronics like computers and lights that never need charging.
The Alpha Bike is a working concept designed by engineering students at UPenn. While it isn't slated for production, we believe it represents technologies and applications that will trickle down to production bikes of the future. We're proud to have contributed to this groundbreaking project. Learn more at thealphabike.com.

Breakaway riders Meurig James and Nick Rogers were on a training ride on Friday, March 18th. At 7pm, they were riding through Fairmount Park near the Please Touch Museum when Meurig was struck by a white SUV.
The driver was exceeding the posted 25 mph speed limit. The collision sent Meurig through the air, landing in the grass near the intersection. The vehicle never stopped.
Meurig was left with multiple broken bones, internal bleeding, and life-threatening injuries to his lungs.
He was rushed to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he spent several days in the ICU after immediate surgery on his ankle and knee.
Once stabilized Meurig underwent another operation to affix metal plates on his collarbone.
Meurig is one of our most accomplished riders, with many wins in his career including last year's Category 3 PA BAR title. Along with our best wishes is the hope that the hit-and-run driver be brought to justice.
Please call 215.686.TIPS with information on the offending driver or any vehicles that match the description. Meurig’s employer, Celerant Consulting, is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
Follow Meurig's progress here. |

We are thrilled to announce that shop owner and head coach Joe Wentzell has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Cycling Association as the Masters Rider of the Year!
The award was voted on by his peers; several of whom cited his performance on the bike, his promotion of races, the growth of Breakawaybikes.com/QCW Cycling (a shop-sponsored club), his support of local cycling, his commitment to his family, and exposing his son to racing at an early age.
This makes us particularly proud. His stellar race performance is a solid endorsement of the coaching and training programs taught at the Breakaway Training Center. But more than that, the recognition of his—and by extension, his shop's—off-the-bike contributions cements our place in the heart of the Philadelphia cycling community. Nicely done, Joe! |

We've just finished renovating both our brick-and-mortar shop and our website. It was a lot of work, but we do what we can to enhance the Breakaway experience. Stop by and check out the many different ways we're making a great thing even greater! |
There are many factors to consider when evaluating prospective additions to our product offerings: we have to balance qualities like brand recognition, fiscal appeal, and overall value. Beyond that, we have to make sure the bikes' fit philosophy complements the wonderful bikes we already carry.
Ergo, it gives us great pleasure to announce that we have added Trek to our product family. Trek's collection of bicycles include everything from savvy commuters to Tour-proven race machines, with a selection to fit every budget. Each and every Trek bike is backed by the research, development, and know-how of one of the largest producers in the world.
With Trek's Gary Fisher Collection, the innovative mind that brought us the mountain bike teams up with one of the planet's most experienced bike manufacturers. The line offers a robust selection of 29ers, but it doesn't stop there: Gary Fisher brings his original approach to bicycle design to two-wheelers of all breeds.
Keith Bontrager, another godfather of mountain biking, designs products for Trek under the Bontrager brand. His wheels and components offer solid performance and often come stock on Trek bikes. You'll find value and reliability in the practical end, and inspired innovation fused to exotic technologies in the upper echelons.
These products round out our offerings very nicely; the inclusion of Trek bikes to our current selection by Felt, Fuji, Scott, and Giant ensures that we have the perfect bike for you. Come see for yourself! |
