It all started when Joe Wentzell bought a pair of socks from Glenn before the Art Museum group ride more than a decade ago. Glenn Krotick was operating a business from the back of his Ford Probe—selling socks branded with the Breakaway logo—though his aspirations were to build something bigger for the cycling community.
At the time, Glenn was a spinning instructor and Joe had just completed a masters degree in exercise science from Temple University. Together, they set out to create a sophisticated, science-based training program geared towards cyclists. RPM was born.
Joe's cycling program used training zones based on power and heart rate. In '96, very few people knew about power-based training; Joe was a pioneer in that regard. After a season of fine-tuning, the first RPM sessions were held in borrowed spaces through local gym contacts—whenever there were open time slots. Both Joe and Glenn transported trainers in the trunk of their cars from gym to gym so that participants can train on their own bikes.
Since those humble beginnings, they have trained hundreds of athletes with varying levels of ability. The RPM indoor sessions have become a staple for the Philadelphia cycling community; not only during the long winter months, but also filling up classes all through the year. The sessions are now held at the Breakaway Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility above Breakaway Bikes. From here, Joe and Glenn perform various biometric evaluations (e.g., V02 max, blood lactate) and custom bike fittings that combine their proprietary methods with industry standards like Fit Kit, LeMond Fitting Systems, and Retul.
The philosophy behind RPM reflects their personal backgrounds. Joe was a Division 1 defensive tackle at Temple, tipping the scales at 285 lbs. Cycling enabled him to drop nearly 100 lbs. He progressed from a Cat 5 beginner to a Cat 2 elite racer in a little over a season. Glenn was a competitive swimmer and triathlete during his college years. Like Joe, Glenn adopted bike racing to stay fit and competitive and moved up to Cat 2 racing. Glenn has since returned to triathlons and became the Mid-Atlantic Masters Champion at the international distance in 2007.
Since Joe and Glenn both transitioned into cycling relatively late in life, they understand the apprehension of starting a new sport. They know first-hand what it's like to juggle training with work and familial obligations. With that in mind, their coaching programs—while demanding—are designed to strike a work-life-training balance.
In a grander scheme, they see themselves as ambassadors; promoting Philadelphia cycling by actively leading rides and taking the time to make newcomers feel welcome and at ease on the road. The shop sponsors Penn Cycling, Temple Cycling, QCW Cycling, and the Breakaway Triathlon Team. They way they see it, the shop will do well as long as the community it services thrives. |
